Access
Follow signs to National Trust Stourhead Gardens. Stourhead (Western) Estate lies south west of the National Trust Property. Free access to all public footpaths and public bridleways shown on the map. Free access to waymarked paths to enable circular walks to be made from Alfred's Tower. Free access to walkers on all woodland tracks. Horse riding in permitted area, other than public bridleways, by permit obtainable from the Estate Office. Access to the Ancient Monuments: Jack's Tower and Earthwork Enclosure in Castle Wood by written prior appointment arranged through the Estate Office.

The owner's binding undertakings
(a) To take reasonable steps for the maintenance of the Stourhead (Western) Estate and the preservation of its character, including within 24 months after designation of the property to prepare a Heritage Management Plan to the satisfaction of the Countryside Agency, English Nature and the Forestry Commission in accordance with the Countryside Agency's guidance for the preparation of such plans, and the said plan will be revised and updated every five years. (b) To take reasonable steps to secure reasonable access to the public by maintaining at least the current level of public access to the Stourhead (Western) Estate, namely: (i) a number of public footpaths extending across the property. (ii) a dedicated public bridleway from Alfred's Tower to Backslough Lodge. (iii) a network of permissive bridleways within the woodlands, also open by permit to horse riders. Permits allow access …
