BERRY POMEROY CASTLE

A late medieval castle sited half way up a wooded hillside, looking out over a deep ravine. It combines the remains of a large castle with a flamboyant courtier's mansion.

Access

Directions: The Castle is located approximately 2 1/2 miles east of Totnes off the A385 and 4 miles west of Paignton. The entrance gate is 1/2 mile north-east of Berry Pomeroy village then 1/2 mile drive. The narrow approach is unsuitable for coaches. Site is managed by English Heritage. The owner's binding undertakings

(i) To take reasonable steps for the maintenance repair and preservation of the property, and for securing reasonable access to the public. (The property is currently under the Guardianship of English Heritage pursuant to an Agreement dated 31st December 1987. For so long as this Agreement remains in operation, this will represent the "reasonable steps" referred to above.) (ii) To provide a copy of the terms of the undertaking for publication by the Inland Revenue in whole or in part and with any adaptation of format they may decide. (iii) In the event that English Heritage cease to be responsible for the maintenance repair and preservation of the property, and for securing reasonable access to the public, to send an annual report to Inland Revenue Capital Taxes to include details of the year's maintenance, repair and preservation of the property, and of the record of public access.
