At BUCKLAND ABBEY, a group of George III dining chairs.

A group of ten George III dining chairs, in the Chippendale taste, each with undulating top rail terminating in rounded corners, over a pierced scroll carved Gothic central splat, reeded uprights, stuffover seats, raised on square legs, carved with a blind fret motifs and united by H-stretcher.

Access

Nine of the ten chairs are on loan to the National Trust and are displayed at Buckland Abbey, Devon when the property is open to the public. The tenth chair may be seen by prior appointment through the contact shown. Details of access can be found at the website address shown.

The owner's binding undertakings

1. I undertake with respect to the chairs that during my lifetime, or their earlier disposal whether by sale or gift or otherwise: (a) to keep the Chairs, as a group, permanently in the United Kingdom and not to remove all or any of them temporarily except for a purpose and period approved by HM Revenue and Customs ("HMRC") (b) to take reasonable steps for their preservation; (c) to take the following steps to secure reasonable access to the public (i) to agree long term loan ("the loan") of the Chairs to the National Trust ("NT") for display at Buckland Abbey, Devon when the property is open to the public. (ii) if the loan is declined or terminated by the NT, I shall agree with HMRC Inheritance Tax ("HMRC IHT") alternative arrangements for providing the public with access to the chairs.
