Archive of Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis (1738-1805): Comprising his papers as second-in-command in North America, 1778-1781, and as governor-general of India, 1786-1793, January-October 1805, with limited papers relating to his service as master-general of the ordnance, 1795-1801 and lord-lieutenant of Ireland, 1798-1801. Articles of capitulation of the forces under Cornwallis's command at Yorktown, 19 October 1781, with related correspondence with George Washington, 17-19 October; as well as Cornwallis's correspondence (including retained copies, often autograph, of outgoing correspondence) for the preceding campaigns in the southern state

We undertake with respect to the Collection, that until it is disposed of whether by sale or gift or otherwise: (a) to keep the Collection, as a Collection, permanently in the United Kingdom and not to remove it or any part of it temporarily except for a purpose and a period approved by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC); (b) to take reasonable steps for its preservation; (c) to take the following steps to secure reasonable access to the public (i) the objects in the attached schedule will be on loan to The National Archives. (ii) if the loan to The National Archives is terminated by the institution, we shall agree with HMRC alternative arrangements for providing the public with access to the objects.
